Donald Trump will address Republican senators today amid growing divisions within the party, the Associated Press reports.
The U.S. president will take part in a closed-door Senate Republican lunch for the first time in more than a year.
As the agency notes, in recent months Trump has pressured senators to focus on advancing his bill requiring proof of citizenship from voters, although the measure still does not have enough support to pass.
Trump has also sought funding for individual White House projects and demanded that Republicans publicly support his policy on Iran. At the same time, some senators have openly expressed doubts about the administration’s strategy.
Further discontent inside the party was caused by Trump’s decision to back primary challengers against incumbent Republican senators John Cornyn and Bill Cassidy, who had previously regularly voted for his initiatives.
“Both lost their primaries and have since become more critical of the president,” AP writes.
Despite this, many senators said ahead of the meeting that they expected to focus on finding unity within the party.
“If we’re going to win the midterm elections, we need to come to a common view. Right now we are not on the same wavelength, and that seems dangerous to me,” said Senator John Cornyn of Texas.
Senator Thom Tillis expressed hope that the meeting would be conciliatory in nature.
According to AP, Trump’s relationship with Senate Republican Majority Leader John Thune is creating additional tension. Although they maintain a working relationship, Thune increasingly has to explain to the president that some of his initiatives have no chance of passing through Congress.
Tehran. Many Republicans still have not received detailed information about the agreements reached and intend to use the meeting to seek explanations from the president.
In addition, senators may raise the issue of Trump’s decision to delay Jay Clayton’s nomination as director of national intelligence. Republican leaders had expected to confirm him quickly, but the president unexpectedly paused the process.
