The U.S. Senate approved a war-powers resolution on Iran that prohibits President Donald Trump from launching military action against Tehran without congressional authorization. It is the first time such a measure has passed both chambers of Congress.
At the same time, the resolution is concurrent: it does not have the force of law, does not require the president’s signature and is primarily symbolic.
The Senate vote ended 50 to 48. Four Republicans joined most Democrats in supporting the measure. One Democrat—Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania—voted against it. Two Republicans, Mitch McConnell and Dave McCormick, did not take part in the vote.
