The agreement between the United States and Iran has already entered into force, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said, after acting as mediator in its conclusion.
According to him, as a first step, Tehran is opening the Strait of Hormuz, while Washington is lifting the naval blockade.
Sharif said the memorandum was signed by U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, while he himself approved the document as mediator.
“The signing of this agreement at the highest level of the respective governments demonstrates both sides’ commitment to a diplomatic settlement of the conflict. The Islamabad Memorandum enters into force immediately, and as a first step Iran will immediately open the Strait of Hormuz, while the United States will immediately lift the naval blockade,” Sharif said in a statement.
The Pakistani prime minister also thanked the leaders of the United States and Iran for reaching the agreements.
“I extend my sincere congratulations and deep appreciation to U.S. President Donald Trump, whose unwavering commitment to diplomacy and preference for a peaceful settlement have once again helped bring an end to a conflict that could have had devastating consequences for the region and the entire world. <…> I express my deep respect and appreciation to His Eminence Ayatollah Seyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, Supreme Leader of Iran, as well as to President Masoud Pezeshkian, for their wisdom, foresight and statesmanship in supporting the cause of peace,” he said.
The statement also notes the contribution of the leadership of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt, which took part in the process of reaching the agreement.
“May this Memorandum of Understanding become a solid foundation for greater understanding, mutual respect and shared prosperity for the entire region,” Sharif added.
