Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar said his government is ready to grant asylum to Ukrainians who come to the country to avoid mobilization.
During a parliamentary debate, Magyar said Budapest does not support the EU proposal under which Ukrainian men of conscription age should not be granted temporary protection.
Earlier, Hungarian Interior Minister Gábor Pósvai said at a meeting of the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council that Budapest opposes the European Commission’s initiative to tighten requirements for Ukrainian refugees staying in the European Union.
Magyar stressed that the European Commission’s decision would not prevent Hungary from granting asylum to “those who come to our country to avoid conscription.”
He also said that every Hungarian compatriot can count on the Tisza government both inside the country and beyond its borders.
Earlier, Denmark’s government said it would not grant refugee status to Ukrainian men aged 23 to 60. Switzerland may also restrict protective status for Ukrainian men liable for military service.
