China will form an international coalition of 29 countries to advance artificial intelligence. Xi Jinping named Russia, Belarus, Brazil, Kazakhstan and Indonesia among its participants.
The Chinese president announced the new initiative at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai. It was Xi’s first personal appearance at China’s largest technology gathering.
In his speech, he called for a more open approach to AI development and broader international cooperation in the field.
“A single string cannot make music, and a single tree cannot make a forest. The development of artificial intelligence must become a symphony of international cooperation,” Xi said.
The Chinese leader also advocated creating mechanisms to govern the new technology. Countries need to adopt appropriate laws and regulations, he said, as well as introduce systems for monitoring, early warning and rapid response.
These measures should “strengthen safety safeguards, prevent abuse and malicious use, and ensure that artificial intelligence always remains under human control,” the Chinese president said.
