Rescuers Are Searching for a Woman and Child Under the Rubble of a High-Rise in Zaporizhzhia

Russia attacked Zaporizhzhia and the surrounding region with guided aerial bombs on July 19. The strike hit a residential neighborhood, damaging private homes and apartment buildings, according to Ivan Fedorov, head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration.

Two people were killed. Paramedics are treating at least 10 injured people, whose conditions and injuries are still being assessed.

Preliminary reports indicate that two people—a woman and a child—may be trapped beneath the rubble of a damaged apartment building. Rescue crews are continuing search-and-rescue operations. Authorities are urging residents to remain in safe locations and avoid areas where emergency services are working.

Because of its proximity to the front line, Zaporizhzhia has come under attack by guided aerial bombs almost daily in recent weeks. On July 16, a strike involving three such bombs killed three people in the city—two women, ages 38 and 59, and a 41-year-old man—and injured at least two children. The Security Service of Ukraine opened a war-crimes investigation into the attack. On July 4, seven people, including a 10-year-old child, were injured in a strike on a parking lot and a neighborhood of private homes.
