The number of civilian casualties in Ukraine in 2026 is at “a significantly higher level” than in previous years, said Rosemary DiCarlo, the UN under-secretary-general for political and peacebuilding affairs. She spoke at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council convened over the intensification of Russian strikes on Ukraine.
According to preliminary data, at least 265 civilians were killed in June, and another 1,816 people were injured. The final figures may be higher, in which case June would become the deadliest month for civilians since the start of the war.
The highest figure is currently recorded for May 2026, when, according to the UN, 274 civilians were killed.
DiCarlo also said the number of civilian casualties in Ukraine has risen every year since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
In total since February 2022, according to the UN, at least 16,402 civilians have been killed in Ukraine, including 802 minors. Another 48,428 people have been injured.
