Donald Trump said the US is likely to carry out new strikes on Iran, increasing pressure on Tehran and raising the risk of a return to full-scale war.
“We hit them very hard last night,” Trump said on Wednesday on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara. “We will probably hit them hard again tonight.”
“I will give a little warning,” he added. “But we’ll see how things go. No, I’m not happy with them.”
Trump made the statement several hours after the US struck Iran and revoked an exemption that had allowed Tehran to sell oil on the global market.
Washington said the measures were a response to attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, which the US blamed on Iran.
The steps represent the most serious threat yet to the ceasefire between the US and Iran and to negotiations on a broader agreement to end the war.
