Keir Starmer said he does not intend to resign after Labour’s heavy defeat in the local elections and plans to lead the party again in the 2029 general election.
Bloomberg analyzed the prime minister’s remarks against the backdrop of Britain’s deepening political crisis.
In the recent local elections, the Labour Party lost around 1,500 council seats across England. The main winner of the vote was Nigel Farage’s right-wing Reform UK.
According to Bloomberg, doubts are growing within Labour over Starmer’s ability to remain in power. The agency reports that some MPs are already discussing the possibility of removing him after the disastrous election results.
“Members of parliament are considering removing Starmer after major losses in local elections in which the governing party lost nearly three out of every five seats it was defending, while populists on the right and left made significant gains,” Bloomberg noted.
According to the agency, more than 30 Labour MPs have already demanded a change in the party’s direction and begun calling for new leadership.
