Elon Musk’s SpaceX has developed a prototype device for human interaction with artificial intelligence. According to The Wall Street Journal, the company showed it to investors shortly before its recent IPO.
The publication’s sources describe the device as a thin, minimalist gadget that resembles a smartphone. The prototype, they said, is thinner than an iPhone, though no specific model was named for comparison. The device is expected to run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Some WSJ sources say a proprietary operating system is also being developed for it.
SpaceX is betting that the new product could change the way people typically interact with AI. But the project’s description does not yet make clear how such interaction would work, or what functions the device would have.
According to the WSJ, the development is at an early stage. It is also unclear whether the device will ever reach a commercial launch. SpaceX representatives have not yet responded to journalists’ requests for comment.
SpaceX is best known as an aerospace company, but its activities are not limited to that field. It also owns xAI, the company developing the AI chatbot Grok.
Elon Musk has previously floated the possibility of releasing his own smartphone amid dissatisfaction with Apple’s policies toward third-party apps. He later said he had abandoned those plans.
Over the past two years, several devices have come to market that were positioned either as smartphone replacements or as more convenient ways to work with AI assistants. None has succeeded.
OpenAI is currently developing a similar AI gadget together with former Apple chief designer Jony Ive. The timing of its release remains unknown.
