Qatar, Egypt, Pakistan and several other mediators have proposed that the United States and Iran halt hostilities for 10 days, Axios reports, citing sources. Under the proposal, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz would resume during the pause, while Washington and Tehran would begin negotiating long-term terms for its use.
The Trump administration is reviewing the proposal and has urged Israel not to take steps that could “close the diplomatic window.” The United States is also preparing for the talks to collapse—dozens of fighter jets and aerial refueling tankers have been deployed to the region in case of a large-scale joint operation with Israel.
Neither Washington nor Tehran has yet agreed to the ceasefire. According to Axios, Trump may continue striking Iran for several more days in response to the deaths of American service members before seriously considering the mediators’ initiative.
