Brussels intends to accelerate Moldova’s accession process into the European Union as much as possible. Reuters reports this citing comments by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas after a meeting with President Maia Sandu.
According to Kallas, Chisinau currently faces “favorable conditions” for advancing toward EU membership amid political changes in several European countries.
“We have not yet set that date, but it is obvious that we need to move quickly,” she said.
Kallas noted that no EU member states currently oppose Moldova’s accession, though the situation could change after shifts of power in individual countries.
“You never know when a government may come in that could have a bilateral issue,” the EU foreign policy chief said.
Brussels also believes that the frozen conflict in Transnistria should not become an obstacle to Moldova’s integration into the European Union.
At the same time, the European Union continues to oppose accelerated Ukrainian accession to the bloc.
