Minneapolis authorities reported a new shooting incident involving federal law enforcement officers during immigration operations carried out by the Donald Trump administration in the city.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said city officials have identified the man shot by federal officers on the morning of January 24, but his name has not yet been released.
According to O’Hara, the deceased was a white man, a city resident, and a U.S. citizen. He was 37 years old. Earlier, news agencies had reported that the man was 51.
The police chief also said that federal authorities had provided neither the police department nor city officials with any details about today’s incident.
The shooting occurred less than three weeks after the death of Renee Good, who was shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minnesota as she attempted to drive away from a confrontation with officers. The episode sparked protests nationwide and sustained demonstrations in Minneapolis itself.
In a morning statement on Saturday, January 24, city officials said it involved a “shooting with federal law enforcement involvement” near the intersection of West 26th Street and Nicollet Avenue South, adding that they were “working to confirm additional details.”
“We ask the public to remain calm and avoid the area,” the statement said.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz called for the immediate suspension of the Trump administration’s immigration operations within the state.

After the shooting, an angry crowd gathered at the scene. People shouted insults at federal officers, calling them “cowards” and demanding that they leave. As one officer departed, he responded mockingly: “Yeah, yeah.” In a separate incident, agents forcibly shoved a screaming protester into a vehicle, the Associated Press reported.
The intersection where the shooting occurred has been sealed off. Border Patrol officers armed with batons are present at the scene.

Tear gas has been deployed. Popping sounds from crowd-control munitions can be heard nearby, including flash-bang grenades. A haze from clouds of tear gas hangs over the street, while protesters remain at the scene.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE and the Border Patrol, said the man shot by federal immigration agents earlier in the morning was pronounced dead at the scene. In its statement, the department said the officer fired “defensive gunfire.” The federal agency also described those gathered at the site as “rioters,” saying that about 200 people in southern Minneapolis were attempting to “disrupt operations and attack law enforcement officers.”
