"I draw pretty pictures." Suite Charlie — a Canadian simplicity and Japanese philosophy

A native of Canada, Suite Charlie, having returned home after a long journey to the past, understood and rethought not only her life, but also ushered in a desire to picture everything she saw. But the trouble is that she knew almost nothing about brushes, paints and canvas, as she had been more gravitated to sculpture. However, some time later, Charlie masters the technology of painting on her own and after 2 years back in Canada, she organized the first exhibition of her author's works.

In her works Suite combines geometry, elements of flower arranging and ethnic portraits. It might seem that nothing decent can come out of such a bizarre set of techniques and forms. But despite the lack of necessary education, the artist reveals some delicate Japanese sur, which similarly to good Japanese movies, has everything: pristine beauty, hidden pain and agony of knowledge, a sense of quiet strength and great inner spirit.

It is hard to believe that such pathetically keen and convey emotions and moods can be exposed by not a graduate from famous art school, not an apprentice of the great artist, but a simple self-taught, an extraordinary woman, Japanese mulatto.

The characters of Charlie's paintings is always a girl like herself. At the same time, each of them has her own history, her own colors. Suite plays on contrasts genuinely. Faint pastel whitish of smooth skin becomes the center of attention thanks to the bright and sharp forms of framing around. Black and white illustrations being watched very deeply sometimes become lengthy and fully absorb our attention and ourselves. Girls in the portraits look right into our souls whether telling their stories, or simply enjoying the silence in our accompanying, ready to listen to what we have to tell them. The artist herself says that it is absolutely not intentional that her heroines are permanently girls. It just opens that great magic of colors and lights better, it is more comfortable to pass it with the help of female images. "Very often, — says Charlie, — it is the color that becomes a subject of the image, it is not necessary to focus on the model." Thus the self-taught artist is fundamentally changing our understanding of the fine arts, and especially of the usual portraits, exposing the amazing colors on the first place and making images of a minor (but devilishly handsome) result of the her color game.
