Donald Trump’s administration plans to significantly expand ICE’s presence in New York, White House border-policy chief Tom Homan said.
Speaking on Fox News, he said the city would see more immigration-enforcement officers deployed than ever before.
“You will see more ICE officers than ever before in New York, and it is already happening. I have reviewed the operational plan. I am not going to say exactly when it will happen, but it will happen,” Homan said.
According to him, he personally warned New York Governor Kathy Hochul: if state authorities restrict federal agents’ access to detainees in police facilities, New York will be “flooded” with ICE officers.
Bloomberg notes that Trump and Homan had previously threatened to increase the immigration-police presence in New York. So far, however, such measures have not been applied there on the same scale as in some other Democratic-run states and cities.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said such actions could spoil the atmosphere of the World Cup, which is expected to bring thousands of foreign visitors to the New York metropolitan area. Matches there are set to begin later this month.
“We will not allow ICE or anyone else to sow fear in our communities—especially now. As the world comes to our city, we will proudly stand with our immigrant neighbors and reject these attacks for what they are: an attempt to divide us,” Mamdani wrote on X.
