On June 30, the court ruled that such restrictions, introduced at the state level, do not constitute discrimination and are therefore lawful. The decision was adopted by six votes to three.
The court said, in particular, that these provisions “classify not on the basis of gender identity or transgender status, but on the basis of biological sex.”
The case challenged laws in Idaho and West Virginia that restrict the participation of transgender girls and women in women’s sports.
Given U.S. case law, the decision could have broader consequences: it may be cited in debates over similar restrictions in other states.
The White House, including Donald Trump personally, had repeatedly supported banning transgender women from competing in women’s events.
