A bill titled “On the Annexation and Granting of Statehood to Greenland” has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. It was authored by Republican Congressman Randy Fine.
According to Fine, the measure authorizes the president to seek the funding required for Greenland’s accession. The congressman wrote about this on the social media platform X, adding that “our adversaries are trying to entrench themselves in the Arctic, and we cannot allow that”—echoing language previously used by the White House.
In a press release cited by The Hill, Fine said that “whoever controls Greenland controls key Arctic sea lanes and the security architecture that protects the United States.”
The bill explicitly authorizes U.S. President Donald Trump “to take any and all necessary actions to acquire Greenland as a territory of the United States,” including through annexation.
At the time of publication, it was unclear whether the lower chamber of Congress would move to bring the bill up for consideration.
