US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that the global tariff imposed by the White House following the administration’s defeat in the Supreme Court will probably be raised from 10 to 15 percent as early as this week.
Donald Trump announced the new tariff rate last month after the Supreme Court ruled that a substantial portion of the duties introduced as part of the administration’s trade war were unlawful.
The US administration had previously warned of the possibility of imposing a 15 percent tariff but has so far limited the rate to 10 percent, saying the higher duty would be applied later without specifying an exact date.
Asked when the 15 percent rate might take effect, Bessent said on CNBC: “That will likely happen this week.”
