Since the beginning of 2026, the United States has received more than $13 billion from sales of oil produced in Venezuela, the Financial Times reports, based on its own calculations.
The proceeds are deposited into American accounts and are then supposed to be transferred to Venezuela. The White House, however, has disclosed almost nothing about how much has been transferred or how the money has been used, the newspaper notes.
Six months after the arrangement began, “evidence of an economic recovery in Venezuela remains distinctly underwhelming,” the Financial Times writes.
The lack of transparency has drawn criticism from Democrats.
“Hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of Venezuelan oil is being controlled by the Trump administration without transparency or safeguards,” Democratic Congressman Joaquin Castro told the newspaper.
