The United States has informed a number of European countries that weapons deliveries under already signed contracts will be delayed because of the war in the Middle East, Reuters reports, citing sources.
According to the agency’s sources, the fighting with Iran is depleting American stockpiles, prompting Washington to postpone some previously approved deliveries. The delays will affect, in particular, the Baltic and Scandinavian countries, including states bordering Russia.
The shipments in question involve weapons purchased through the Foreign Military Sales program but not yet delivered to buyers. They include various types of munitions for both offensive and defensive purposes. According to Reuters, European officials complain that the situation is leaving them in a difficult position.
In Washington, the need for postponements is being explained by a reallocation of resources toward the Middle East. U.S. officials also point to European countries’ reluctance to take part in the operation to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
