Typhoon Ragasa, which formed in the Pacific Ocean, made landfall on China’s eastern coast on September 24 after sweeping through Hong Kong, Macau, and Guangdong province. Ahead of the storm, authorities evacuated around 1.9 million people. Schools were closed and public transport was suspended in Guangdong and Macau, while Hong Kong’s airport—one of the busiest in the world—canceled hundreds of flights.
Before reaching China, the typhoon struck the Philippines and Taiwan, where a total of 20 people were killed. Wind gusts exceeded 200 kilometers per hour, and coastal areas were flooded by massive waves. Ragasa ranks among the most powerful typhoons of the past decade. As it moves further inland, its strength is expected to gradually diminish.
