U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has resigned from Donald Trump’s administration, Fox News reports.
According to the network, the reason was the serious illness of her husband, Abraham Williams, who was diagnosed with “an extremely rare form of bone cancer.”
Fox News reports that Gabbard informed Trump of her decision during a meeting in the Oval Office. Her final day in office is scheduled for June 30.
“I must leave public service in order to be by my husband’s side and fully support him in this fight,” her resignation letter states.
In her statement, Gabbard also thanked Trump for his trust and said that during her tenure she had achieved “unprecedented transparency” within the U.S. intelligence community.
Fox News notes that under Gabbard, more than 500,000 pages of documents were declassified, including materials related to the Crossfire Hurricane investigation, files on the assassinations of John and Robert Kennedy, and a number of other archival records.
In addition, during her leadership a task force was created to investigate the alleged “politicization of federal institutions” during Joe Biden’s administration.
