Donald Trump announced that, in response to a ruling by the US Supreme Court, he is raising the so-called global tariff on imports into the United States for all countries—from 10% to 15%.
“As president of the United States of America, I am immediately increasing the 10-percent global tariff for countries, many of which have been ‘looting’ the US with impunity for decades (until I came to power!), to the fully permitted and legally justified level of 15%,” he wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.
According to Trump, in the coming months his administration plans to determine and impose new “legally permissible tariffs” in order, as he put it, to continue “making America great again.”
On February 20, the US Supreme Court ruled that Trump had violated federal law when he unilaterally imposed tariffs on most countries around the world. The court said that applying a statute allowing such measures only in a national emergency required congressional approval. Following the decision, Trump announced a 10-percent tariff on all imports into the US—in addition to existing duties.
