In Oslo, the laureate of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize was announced. The award went to María Corina Machado “for her tireless defense of the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people and her struggle for a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
Machado, a former member of Venezuela’s National Assembly, ran for president in 2012 and two years later became one of the leaders of protests against the government of Nicolás Maduro. Despite pressure and threats, she continues to live in the country, hiding from persecution. In 2024, the European Parliament awarded her the Andrei Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, which she shared with another opposition politician, Edmundo González.
Last year, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo, which unites survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The Peace Prize, whose laureates are traditionally announced in Oslo, is considered the penultimate in the Nobel cycle. On October 13, the winners of the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel—established by the Bank of Sweden in 1968—will be revealed.
Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, and according to Bloomberg, the White House actively lobbied for his nomination.
