Donald Trump said that Iran has definitively abandoned the pursuit and possession of nuclear weapons. According to him, the understanding reached rules out such a possibility in the future.
“Remember I said they cannot have nuclear weapons? And they won’t—they have agreed that they will never have nuclear weapons,” he said at a press conference at the White House.
Trump also said that Washington is “currently in talks” with Tehran. He claimed that the Iranian side is interested in reaching an agreement. “I can tell you, they want to make a deal—and who wouldn’t in their position? Look: their navy is destroyed, their air force is destroyed, their communications systems are destroyed,” he said, adding that Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance are taking part in the negotiations.
He did not specify which Iranian representatives are involved in the contacts. Trump himself claimed that the Iranian leadership has “disappeared” and that “no one knows who to talk to,” yet, according to him, the United States is engaging “with the right people” who “very much want to make a deal.”
