Donald Trump plans to devote part of an address to the nation to alleged Chinese interference in the 2020 presidential election, CBS reports, citing sources. The speech is expected to take place overnight from July 16 to July 17.
The heads of the CIA and FBI, the director of national intelligence and the secretary of homeland security are expected to appear alongside the president.
According to the network, Trump intends to claim that Chinese intelligence services illegally gained access to US voter rolls. The president is also expected to accuse the American intelligence community of knowing about the breach but concealing the information from the White House, which Trump himself occupied at the time.
It remains unclear how extensive the alleged interference described in the address will be. It is also uncertain whether the allegations will be limited to claims that China accessed and analyzed the data or whether Trump will assert that voter rolls were altered in an effort to influence the election’s outcome.
Trump lost the 2020 election to Democratic candidate Joe Biden.
