Donald Trump’s administration is considering holding an international summit focused on countering the left-wing movement Antifa and other extremist groups—three sources familiar with the planning told Reuters. According to them, the initiative reflects a marked shift in US counterterrorism priorities over the past year.
The forum, tentatively scheduled for June-July, is expected to bring together representatives from various countries to discuss strategies for countering Antifa and sharing intelligence. Among the organizers, the sources named Thomas DiNanno, the assistant secretary of state for arms control and international security.
In response to the agency’s inquiry, representatives of the White House and the State Department said they view Antifa as a serious security threat.
“Anarchists, Marxists, and violent extremists from Antifa have waged a terrorist campaign in the United States and across the Western world for decades, carrying out bombings, beatings, shootings, and riots in service of their extremist agenda,” said State Department deputy spokesperson Tommy Pigott.
