The Donald Trump administration has requested $672 million to remove and destroy Iranian nuclear materials, as well as to inspect and verify Iran’s nuclear facilities, Fox News reports.
The amount is part of a previously submitted $80 billion request to Congress. The rest of the package is expected to go toward funding military operations, replenishing weapons stockpiles and other U.S. national-security priorities.
According to the channel, the $672 million is planned for the removal and disposal of Iranian nuclear materials, including uranium hexafluoride (UF6), uranium in various forms, as well as fuel for research reactors, including highly enriched uranium.
The funds are also meant to support verification activities inside Iran, IAEA inspections, stronger efforts to combat nuclear-material smuggling and an expansion of the work of the U.S. Nuclear Emergency Support Team in the Middle East.
The White House told Fox News that the funding would be transferred to the U.S. Department of Energy to support “activities that will end Iran’s ability to develop or acquire nuclear weapons.”
