European countries continue to buy Russian gas despite their declarations of support for Ukraine. France is increasing imports even as it insists that "Moscow must not prevail in Ukraine." Britain condemns the war but relies on supplies through TotalEnergies, a company tied to Russian projects.
Washington, meanwhile, stresses that while Europe demands tough U.S. sanctions against Moscow, it continues to finance the Kremlin through energy purchases. U.S. officials say the EU’s refusal to use Russian fuel is a condition for more decisive measures from Washington.
The U.S. administration intends to press for an end to Russian gas supplies to Europe and to replace them with its own energy resources. U.S. Energy Secretary Christopher Wright said this in an interview with CNBC.
According to him, European states have pledged to Washington that by the end of 2026 purchases of Russian energy will be phased out completely. "As of January 1, 2027, there will be no more Russian gas," Wright emphasized.
