The Scottish Parliament has backed an initiative calling for a new referendum on independence from the United Kingdom.
A total of 72 lawmakers voted in favor of appealing to London to transfer powers to the Scottish Parliament to organize the vote, while 55 voted against.
The initiative was introduced by Scotland’s First Minister and Scottish National Party (SNP) leader John Swinney. His party has consistently advocated for the region’s separation from the United Kingdom.
In May, the SNP became the largest political force in the Scottish Parliament for the fifth consecutive time, securing 58 seats. Swinney said at the time that the election results confirmed public support for the party’s independence agenda.
