OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman said artificial intelligence is unlikely to cause mass job losses, despite his own earlier warnings about a possible “jobs apocalypse” and the disappearance of entire professions.
He made the remarks at a Commonwealth Bank of Australia conference, Reuters reported.
According to Altman, he was “delighted to have been wrong”: AI has so far displaced fewer office workers than he expected several years ago.
The OpenAI chief had previously said the technology could replace a substantial share of the tasks now performed by humans and, in some cases, eliminate entire categories of jobs.
Against that backdrop, reports are increasingly emerging of the difficulties businesses face when implementing AI. According to Business Insider, one of Pizza Hut’s largest franchisees has filed a $100 million lawsuit, alleging that an AI delivery-management system introduced by the chain caused failures, order delays and a decline in sales.
According to the lawsuit, delivery times for half of all orders increased from less than 30 minutes to more than 45 minutes.
