Ukraine was hit overnight by a massive attack involving more than 600 drones and dozens of missiles, Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko said. Energy infrastructure was targeted: DTEK’s thermal power plants were struck, and power outages were recorded across several regions. Rivne, Ternopil, and Khmelnytskyi regions were almost completely without electricity; emergency outages were also introduced in Vinnytsia, Chernihiv, Zhytomyr, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kharkiv regions, according to Ukrenergo and the Ministry of Energy.
In the Zhytomyr region, a child born in 2021 was killed as a result of the attack. The child was taken to hospital, but doctors were unable to save him, said Vitalii Bunechko, head of the regional administration.
In Kyiv’s Sviatoshynskyi district, residents were injured after debris from a Russian drone fell, Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko said. According to him, five people were wounded; one woman was hospitalized. Among the injured were four local residents, including a 16-year-old teenager.

Russian forces also struck the Kyiv region. In the Vyshhorod district, the attack caused a fire in a private two-story house, said Mykola Kalashnyk, head of the regional military administration. A 76-year-old woman was killed; three others were injured—a 50-year-old man, a 49-year-old woman, and a 16-year-old girl.
Casualties were also reported in the Khmelnytskyi region. According to Serhii Tiurin, head of the regional administration, a 72-year-old man was killed as a result of shelling.
In the Zhytomyr region, according to Vitalii Bunechko, debris from cruise missiles and drones was recorded. Residential buildings, civilian infrastructure, and a shop were damaged. Six people were injured, including two children.
Against the backdrop of Russia’s overnight attack on December 23, Poland scrambled fighter jets, while ground-based air-defense systems and radar reconnaissance assets were placed on full alert, the country’s armed forces command said.
