Five children were killed in a collision between an SUV and a van in a rural area of Ontario, Canada, provincial police said.
The crash happened Friday evening at around 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of 4th Line and Wellington Road 12 in Mapleton Township.
According to Ontario police, the children who died—four girls and one boy, aged 4 to 12—were in a van carrying 10 passengers.
Another infant and four adults who were also traveling in the van suffered serious injuries and were hospitalized.
The victims’ identities have not been publicly released. Authorities also did not say where the van had come from or where it was headed.
The driver of the SUV, who was alone in the vehicle, was also taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Police did not specify the nature of the injuries suffered by those hospitalized.
“This is an unimaginable loss,” Ontario Provincial Police West Region Chief Superintendent Dwight Thib said at a news conference on Saturday.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
