Discontent with the performance of Germany’s chancellor, Friedrich Merz, now encompasses roughly 70% of citizens—Bild reports, citing polling by the INSA institute. Compared with the previous survey, the head of government’s standing has noticeably weakened.
As the paper notes, “the situation for the chancellor has deteriorated further: compared with the previous poll, assessments of his personal standing are falling.” The results show that only 23% of respondents are satisfied with Merz’s performance—five percentage points fewer than before. The share who are dissatisfied, by contrast, has climbed to 67%, up by the same margin. Bild stresses that the uptick in approval recorded in January proved short-lived and failed to carry over.
Against this backdrop, the far-right Alternative for Germany is gaining ground, returning to the top of the rankings with 26% support.
