On Saturday evening, June 13, the New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 94–90 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals and won the series 4–1.
It is the club’s first championship title since 1973. The Knicks are now three-time NBA champions: the team previously won in 1970 and 1973.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has already promised to give the players keys to the city.
In New York, Knicks fans celebrated the team’s victory en masse. Crowds blocked traffic in several areas, including on 10th Avenue. On 42nd Street, fans attacked an empty school bus: some climbed onto its roof, while others struck it with scooters, The New York Times writes.
The New York Police Department said 56 people were detained, 15 of them arrested. Ten police officers were injured.
