Netflix has released the trailer for In the Hand of Dante — a new film by Julian Schnabel starring Oscar Isaac, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Gerard Butler, Al Pacino, John Malkovich, and Martin Scorsese. The film will premiere on the platform on June 24, 2026, following a limited theatrical release and a screening at the Tribeca Festival.
Based on Nick Tosches’ novel of the same name, the film combines a crime thriller with historical drama. In the 21st century, writer Nick Tosches becomes entangled in the search for a manuscript believed to be an original copy of The Divine Comedy written by Dante Alighieri himself. A mafia boss tasks him with verifying the manuscript’s authenticity and stealing it. In parallel, the film transports viewers to the 14th century, where Dante is working on his masterpiece.

Oscar Isaac plays two roles simultaneously — modern-day writer Nick Tosches and Dante Alighieri. According to Tribeca’s description, the film explores how the desire for beauty, faith, love, and meaning repeats across eras, while the search for the manuscript gradually becomes a search for the protagonist’s own identity as a writer and poet.
The world premiere of In the Hand of Dante took place out of competition at the 2025 Venice Film Festival. The Venice Biennale described the film as a story of parallel lives separated by 700 years and a “dark and bloody journey” surrounding a priceless manuscript.
