According to a YouGov survey cited by the dpa news agency, a majority of respondents in Germany—58%—say it is necessary to begin negotiations between Merz and Putin to bring the war in Ukraine to an end. Twenty-six percent of those surveyed opposed such a move.
The idea of direct dialogue with Putin has been promoted in recent months by Macron, while Merz and Starmer have consistently opposed the launch of such talks.
