Moldova does not see NATO membership as an immediate political goal because there is no broad public support for such a course. Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi said this on local television.
“Joining NATO, like joining any other international organization, depends on the will of our citizens. If there is broad support, it can be considered a serious prospect and placed on the agenda. In our case, as you know, that support has not existed for various reasons,” Popșoi said.
The minister also acknowledged that he personally supports NATO and previously worked at the Alliance’s center in Chișinău. He said Moldovan politics needed to “lift the taboo” on discussing possible NATO membership, because many politicians avoid the subject.
