Russian forces carried out a combined strike on Kyiv overnight on January 9, using missiles and drones, the city’s mayor Vitali Klitschko said. The attack damaged residential buildings and critical infrastructure facilities, with power and water supply disruptions reported in several districts.
According to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service, five people were killed and 22 others were injured, including five rescue workers. All the injured were taken to hospital.

In the Desnianskyi district, a drone strike hit the roof of an 18-story residential building, triggering a fire. A fire also broke out in a five-story residential building. In the Dniprovskyi district, debris from a drone fell onto the roof of a one-story non-residential structure, while the impact sparked fires in 16-story and nine-story residential buildings. The blast wave partially destroyed the roof of a three-story residential building.
According to Klitschko, damage to critical infrastructure left nearly half of the capital’s apartment buildings—around six thousand—without heating. The city is also experiencing disruptions to water supply, with municipal services operating under an emergency regime.
The mayor described the overnight attack as “the most painful for the capital’s critical infrastructure” and urged Kyiv residents who are able to temporarily leave the city for areas where alternative sources of heat and electricity are available.
Ukraine’s Energy Ministry reported the introduction of emergency power outages on Kyiv’s left bank and in parts of the surrounding region, while scheduled hourly outages remain in effect on the right bank. DTEK later уточнил that, due to the consequences of the attack and grid overloads, emergency outages had been imposed across the entire city. According to the company, 417,000 families in the Desnianskyi, Dniprovskyi, Darnytskyi, and Holosiivskyi districts were left without electricity.
In addition, the building of a Verkhovna Rada committee was left without water and heating, lawmaker Yaroslav Zhelezniak said.
