Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embaló told Jeune Afrique that around noon on November 26, men in military uniform entered his office in the presidential palace and detained him.
He said several senior military officials were taken into custody alongside him, including the chief of the General Staff, his deputy, and the minister of the interior.
The head of state stated that the coup attempt was initiated by the commander of the army’s land forces.
Jeune Afrique reports that gunfire was heard near the presidential palace and the electoral commission building, while soldiers took up positions on a key road leading to the president’s residence.
