At least four people were killed and eight others injured after a gunman opened fire inside a Mormon church in Michigan and set the building ablaze, authorities said.
Initially, officials confirmed one death and eight hospitalizations, with the gunman shot dead by police. Hours later, police discovered at least two more bodies in the charred remains of the church, which have yet to be fully cleared. The death toll is expected to rise.
The shooter was identified as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford, who died at the scene. According to a Marine Corps statement obtained by NewsNation, Sanford served as a sergeant from 2004 to 2008 and took part in the Iraq war. He was awarded several medals, including the Good Conduct Medal.
