Closed-door discussions about a possible replacement for German Chancellor Friedrich Merz have begun within Germany’s Christian Democratic Union, Bild reports.
According to the newspaper, CDU representatives are discussing the situation in small private chat groups and are trying to avoid information leaks to the media.
Potential candidates to replace Merz reportedly include North Rhine-Westphalia Minister-President Hendrik Wüst, Hesse state premier Boris Rhein, and Saxony Minister-President Michael Kretschmer.
As Bild notes, Germany’s chancellor can formally be removed from office through a vote of no confidence in the Bundestag.
