The man who shot children dead in the U.S. state of Louisiana was their father, local police said.
According to the preliminary account, 31-year-old Shamar Elkins first shot a woman dead, then moved to a neighboring house and killed eight of his children. Seven of them were inside. Another child was found dead on the roof—apparently after trying to escape. One more child managed to jump from the roof and flee.
The dead included three boys and five girls between the ages of 3 and 11.
After the attack, Elkins carjacked a vehicle at gunpoint. Police shot him dead during the chase.
