Volodymyr Zelensky has moved away from a US-backed 28-point peace plan and intends to propose a new approach to Donald Trump for ending the war with Russia, the New York Post reports, citing officials.
According to the newspaper, Ukraine is no longer relying on the previous draft agreement and, given changes on the battlefield, is trying to secure more favorable terms.
“Ahead of a key meeting between President Trump and President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday at the NATO summit, Kyiv is moving away from a specific US-backed peace strategy and is seeking to convince Trump that Ukraine still holds key leverage in the conflict,” the article says.
Ukrainian officials told the newspaper that there are currently no plans for a US-Ukraine-Russia summit or for structured talks on a specific peace agreement.
According to the New York Post, the absence of negotiations has coincided with Ukraine’s strengthening position on the front. Ukraine’s ambassador to the US, Olha Stefanishyna, said this “gives us grounds to think more creatively about ending the war,” without specifying what she meant.
Ukrainian officials also see Trump’s growing dissatisfaction with Vladimir Putin as an opportunity to increase pressure on the Kremlin and bring the war to an end.
Another source told the newspaper that Kyiv now intends to focus on “new pressure tactics” meant to force Moscow to reconsider its position.
According to the official, European leaders at the G7 summit urged Trump to view Ukraine as a strategic asset rather than a burden.
Ukrainian authorities believe they are already demonstrating the ability of sustained Western pressure to influence Moscow’s calculations, the New York Post writes.
The newspaper also notes that Zelensky intends to convince Trump not only of the need to end the war, but also that Ukraine has become indispensable to NATO’s long-term security.
