Israeli soldiers shot dead a 7-month-old baby in the occupied West Bank, Reuters reports.
According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, Israeli soldiers opened fire on a car on the evening of June 5 in the Tel Rumeida area south of Hebron. Seven-month-old Sam Fahd Abu Haikal was killed.
The child’s parents suffered gunshot wounds. Their condition is described as moderate.
The child’s grandmother said the family had stopped the car after noticing Israeli soldiers and military vehicles near checkpoint No. 17. According to her, the soldiers then opened fire on the vehicle.
The Israeli military said that during an operation in the Hebron area, soldiers considered the vehicle a threat because it began accelerating toward them. One soldier fired several shots.
According to the Israeli side, three Palestinians were wounded. A preliminary review found that those injured had not been involved in any activity. The military said the incident was under examination.
Tel Rumeida is considered one of the most tense areas of Hebron. Israeli settlers live there under military protection among the Palestinian population.
