Israel has carried out a strike on Beirut—the first in nearly a month. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz, The Times of Israel reports.
According to Israeli officials, the target of the attack was a commander of Hezbollah’s Radwan unit. Israel says the formation has been involved in shelling Israeli communities and attacks on military personnel.
The Israel Defense Forces have not yet officially commented on the strike.
In late April, Netanyahu ordered a “powerful strike” against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. Israeli authorities said the move came in response to violations of the ceasefire after the group launched rockets and drones toward northern Israel and Israeli units stationed in southern Lebanon.
The previous Israeli strike on Beirut took place on April 8. A week later, on April 16, Israel and Lebanon agreed to a ceasefire. After the truce took effect, the Lebanese side accused Israel of violating it. Against this backdrop, US President Donald Trump said Israel would no longer carry out strikes on Lebanon.
