Israel and Lebanon have agreed, under U.S. mediation, on further implementation of the ceasefire, the U.S. State Department said.
After two rounds of talks, the sides adopted a joint statement. In it, Israel and Lebanon confirmed that they have no hostile intentions toward each other and pledged to continue direct dialogue to build confidence, resolve outstanding issues and prepare a comprehensive agreement between the two countries.
The sides also agreed, in coordination with the United States, to move quickly toward the creation of pilot zones where the Lebanese Armed Forces will exercise exclusive control over the territory.
The United States reaffirmed its support for both governments in exercising their sovereignty. Washington stressed that any agreement to end hostilities must be reached directly between the two governments through U.S. mediation, not through separate channels.
The statement also says that the future of relations between Israel and Lebanon should be determined by two sovereign governments.
All sides condemned Iran’s attacks on countries in the region and its continuing activity, which the statement says undermines stability in the Middle East.
The United States said it intends to support the Lebanese Armed Forces in order to strengthen their capabilities and help them ensure effective control over all of Lebanon’s territory.
Israel confirmed that its security and respect for its territorial integrity can be ensured only through the disarmament of Hezbollah and the dismantling of its infrastructure throughout Lebanon.
Lebanon, for its part, reaffirmed the need for mutual respect for internationally recognized borders and the full implementation of the cessation of hostilities, emphasizing the principles of territorial integrity and state sovereignty. Beirut also pledged, with U.S. support, to strengthen the capabilities of the Lebanese Armed Forces to ensure effective control throughout the country.
The sides agreed to resume political and security talks during the week of June 22. Their aim is to reach a comprehensive agreement.
