The Israeli Air Force struck a gas processing facility in southwestern Iran, two senior Israeli officials said.
This marked the first time Israel has targeted Iran’s gas infrastructure—a sector central to the country’s economy. Israeli officials said the operation was coordinated with and approved by the Donald Trump administration; a U.S. Defense Department official confirmed this.
The semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that several facilities at the South Pars gas field near Bushehr were hit. According to the report, emergency services are on site attempting to contain the fire.
Iranian state media said the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had warned of potential attacks and urged the evacuation of several energy facilities in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar.
Previously, the Trump administration had objected to Israel’s strike on oil depots in Tehran and asked that energy infrastructure not be targeted without U.S. approval.
“Remember, for all of those absolute ‘fools’ out there: Iran is considered, by everyone, to be the NUMBER ONE STATE SPONSOR OF TERRORISM. We are rapidly putting them out of that business!” Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social shortly after the Israeli strike.
Qatar condemned Israel’s actions, calling them a threat to global energy security.
