The man accused of killing Ukrainian national Iryna Zarutska in the United States has been found mentally unfit to stand trial. The Daily Wire reported the decision, calling it a “lifeline” for DeCarlos Brown Jr.
Court records show that Brown underwent an evaluation at Central Regional Hospital, after which a report dated December 29, 2025, found him “incapable of proceeding.”

Under North Carolina law, that status means a defendant is unable to understand the nature of the proceedings or work with his defense. As the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill notes, a person found unfit to stand trial cannot be prosecuted or punished by state authorities.
