French President Emmanuel Macron warned of the risk of a “lawless world” and a “drift toward autocracy and violence” amid tensions over Greenland and the threat of new tariffs against French alcoholic beverage producers.
Speaking to participants at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Macron said: “We are moving toward a lawless world,” condemning a “drift toward autocracy and violence…when international law is trampled and imperial ambitions once again rise to the surface.”
Earlier, Donald Trump made public a private exchange between the two heads of state concerning Greenland and threatened France with 200% tariffs on wine and champagne after Macron refused to join his Board of Peace initiative.
“Competition is becoming increasingly fierce and complex, particularly as the United States demands ever greater concessions and seeks to weaken Europe,” the French president said.
